The national lockdown that restricted travel was a blessing in disguise for Youth Action Movement as it challenged the young people to come up with innovative ways to reach more people with Comprehensive Sexuality Education.
Subsequently, WhatsApp proved to be the right innovation to use as schools were closed and young people relied on social media for news and even classes were conducted virtually at some point in time.
“I had never addressed so many people at once in my seven years of experience as a Peer Educator. The platform is far more effective than face to face presentations, here people are free to ask questions without their peers judging them. You would remember that issues of sex still remain one of the most sensitive topics yet the teenage pregnancy rate proves otherwise but with the virtual interactions young people showed the desire to learn in order to make informed decisions.” said Mncedzisi Masuku, YAM president and Peer Educator. A total number of 1200 young people were reached through this initiative.
